2019 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep black currant reduction, black cherry, star anise, methol, cigar box, and rich earth on the nose.  On the palate, this wine oozes power and class, with deep black fruits, sweet herbs, Valrhona chocolate, licorice, and crushed rock.  With a powerful mid-palate and long, seamless finish, this wine will be hard to resist young, but will keep 25-30 years in a cool cellar.

98 Points - Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills is based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It has a gorgeous bouquet of darker currants, chocolate, spice, and dried tobacco to go with a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, seamless style on the palate. With a layered, expansive mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and wonderful purity, this classic, world-class Cabernet will stand toe to toe with the best out there. While it already offers pleasure today (I followed this bottle for multiple days), it will cruise for 20-30 years in cold cellars."

"If you want a perfect example of what makes Chris Peterson one of the best winemakers in Washington, look no further than this stand-out Cabernet Sauvignon from Horse Heaven Hills. This melange of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc is aged for 20 months in 70% new French oak. I adore Cabernets from Horse Heaven Hills and this is a perfect example of these beautiful wines. Boysenberry, leafy herbs, fresh tar, and vanilla bean combine perfectly on the nose. Wonderfully balanced, perfectly structured, high acidity, and a full mouthfeel are all present and perfectly executed. Flavors of ripe blackberry, black plum, and scorched earth fill the palate and you really taste the sense of place with this wine. Like most of Chris’ high-end creations, these wines need some time in the bottle to fully come alive. Give it 3-4 years in your cellar and then watch this wine come to life over the next few decades. Only 6000 bottles produced. Highly recommended."

95 Points/Cellar Selection  - Wine Enthusiast (Sean Sullivan)

"Discovery Vineyard (55%) takes the lead on this wine, followed by Champoux (25%) and Wallula (20%). Blended with Merlot (10%) and Cabernet Franc (5%), this Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas that are arresting, with notes of dried and fresh herbs, along with cocoa, bittersweet chocolate, currant and scorched earth. It’s polished and palate coating, while showing the deftness and grace of the vintage. The tannins bring a classic Horse Heaven profile—plump but refined. It gains additional heft as it opens. Best from 2029–2036."

94 Points - Vinous (Owen Bargreen)

The rich, viscous 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills combines plenty of cassis, loamy soil and anise tones with shades of blueberry compote and garrigue on the palate.  Fresh lithe, with a great sense of tension and a touch less dense than the 2018 edition.  This delicious effort will provide drinking enjoyment for another 15 years.

93 Points -  Wine Advocate (Anthony Mueller)

"Consisting of 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep magenta core with a dark ruby edge. Still fresh and vibrant in the glass, ripe dark red fruits waft on the nose with elegant oak tones with the essence of brown baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tight and shows gobs of complexity but will need additional time in bottle before consuming. Although it doesn’t have the shine of the previous vintage, you can bet that this will perform well until its 15th birthday. Only 6,000 bottles were made after the wine rested in 70% new French oak."

93 Points - James Suckling

"Aromas of ripe plums, nutmeg, dried thyme and violets. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Vibrant red fruit and balanced acidity keep the palate refreshing and exciting through the steady finish. Lovely. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Drink or hold."
